Painting timber, render and brick façades
NLL paints timber, render and brick. The right treatment also depends on condition and previous paint. Material alone is therefore insufficient to choose paint.
Specify the existing paint and show any loose paint layers or damaged boards. Cladding replacement is a separate item of work.
Timber cladding replacementShow cracks, loose areas and the existing paint. Painting and re-rendering are different types of work.
Rendered façade painting costsState whether the brickwork is already painted and show its condition. The required treatment must be assessed before a paint system is chosen.
Painting a brick façade: pros and consThis selection describes the surface. It does not determine the treatment or provide a quote.
| Surface | What needs checking? | Before choosing treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Timber façade | Existing paint, loose coatings and damaged boards | Distinguish repainting from cladding replacement and choose a system for the existing treatment |
| Rendered façade | Render condition, cracks and previous paint | Clarify repair needs before defining painting work |
| Brick façade | Whether brick is already painted and its surface condition | Assess conditions before choosing a painting system |
For brick, read about the decision to paint a brick façade. For timber, the guide compares linseed oil paint, acrylic paint and traditional distemper and what affects the choice.
Send whole-façade photos and close-ups of peeling or damaged areas. State known previous paint or treatment. Photos help describe work but do not replace surface assessment.
Painting rendered façades and repair needs
Painting render differs from rerendering a façade. When renewing paint, assess the underlying condition too. Cracks, loose areas and moisture problems may need addressing first.
| What needs clarifying | Assessment information | Question before painting | Effect on the quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing render and paint | Product information or previous specification, if available | Which treatment suits the existing surface? | Paint system and preparation need specifying |
| Cracks and loose areas | Overview photos and close-ups | Must damage be repaired before painting? | Separate repairs from painting work |
| Moisture or recurring damage | Describe where and when the problem appears | Must the cause be investigated before defining the work? | Other measures may be needed before painting |
Do not assume extensive rerendering or building work is included in a painting quote. Read about rendered façade painting labour costs when comparing items.
Preparation, priming and finish coats
The quote must state included preparation and painting. Scope depends on the existing surface and chosen system.
- Cleaning before painting, suited to the surface.
- Removing loose paint where needed.
- Specifying any repairs before painting.
- Priming where the system requires it.
- Finish coats following product instructions for coats and drying.
Timber cladding replacement is a separate task. NLL offers timber cladding replacement; labour and timber must be separated from painting costs. Scaffolding, lifts and other access costs must also appear in the quote.
From enquiry to finished façade
Start with the address, photos and what you want painted. Clearer information makes defining the work easier.
- Describe the house: state location, façade material, approximate area and visible damage.
- Clarify scope: review preparation, painting, access and extras before quoting.
- Compare price components: check labour, materials and other costs separately.
- Plan the work: account for weather, surface condition and paint drying times.
- Review the result: check completed work against the agreed scope.

Timing and weather for façade painting
Façade painting is planned around surface and system requirements. The calendar alone does not establish readiness. Temperature, moisture and weather during drying must match product instructions.
Read more about when façades can be painted in Skåne and state your preferred period in the enquiry. A preferred week is not a confirmed start date.
Façade painting prices: labour and materials
NLL’s timber façade labour guide price is 625–875 SEK/m² including VAT before any applicable ROT. For rendered and brick façades, labour is 500–750 SEK/m² including VAT before any applicable ROT. Materials and other costs are extra; ranges are not whole-house totals.
The measurement is painted façade area, not living area. See façade painting prices and cost factors for price components. To understand materials, you can calculate paint consumption from façade area and coats.
Use the cost calculator for your project for a preliminary cost picture. Any ROT deduction covers eligible labour only and requires eligibility; materials are excluded.
