Compare timber and rendered façades from the house’s construction, condition and maintenance needs; neither material is automatically cheaper over time. For an existing house, assess repair and repainting before considering a change of façade construction.

Quick answer

For an existing house, assess the current façade before comparing timber and render. Construction, condition, exposure, repair scope and maintenance requirements matter more than a universal material winner.

  • The existing surface determines the choice – changing material can require construction work; compare an assessed specification and quote rather than assuming maintenance savings.
  • Timber: inspect the actual system – set maintenance from the actual coating, timber condition and exposure.
  • Render: inspect the actual system – set inspection and repair from the render system, condition and exposure.
  • Coastal exposure matters – assess each elevation’s actual exposure; location alone does not prove that one material needs more work.
  • Fixed price after a site visit – NLL Måleri assesses the surface free before recommending anything.

What is the difference between render and timber façades?

Timber cladding and rendered systems protect the building in different ways, and their detailing and support depend on the construction. Identify the actual system before choosing repairs or paint, whether locally or for a façade renovation in Landskrona.

Both are façade systems with their own construction and maintenance requirements. Timber, render, coatings, joints and water-shedding details must be assessed together; the material label alone does not establish durability.

Whether considering the choice in Kvidinge or further towards Ängelholm start with the existing wall construction and condition. A change of material requires a suitable construction design, while repairs and compatible repainting may retain the current façade. Compare the relevant work under painting timber cladding and rendered façade renovation.

Check system compatibility

Use a coating system documented as compatible with the actual substrate and retained finish. Identify the substrate and previous coating, then follow a compatible system’s preparation and application instructions. The same broad paint type does not by itself guarantee adhesion, and changing type is not automatically impossible.

Which façade suits a damp climate and needs least maintenance in north-west Skåne?

The actual façade system, condition and exposure determine maintenance needs: neither timber nor render is universally the lower-maintenance choice. Inspect joints, water-shedding details and the finish on each elevation.

Mild but wet best describes the climate along the north-west Skåne coast means the actual site exposure should be considered alongside construction and condition. Both timber and rendered systems can need attention at vulnerable details; do not assume render tolerates neglected maintenance.

Choose a maintenance plan suited to the actual building and product system. A coastal address alone does not establish which material is more economical. Related inspection questions are covered in the guide to façade maintenance intervals , where the actual condition and product guidance remain the basis for planning.

Which is cheaper long term: timber or render?

Compare the complete work and maintenance assumptions: initial cost, preparation, access, materials and future maintenance all matter. NLL’s listed labour ranges do not establish a lifetime-cost winner.

A long-term calculation needs project-specific costs and realistic maintenance assumptions. The table below lists decisions to assess rather than proving one material is cheaper.

NLL’s labour price is 625–875 SEK/m² for timber façade painting and 500–750 SEK/m² for rendered façades, including VAT before any applicable ROT. With a full 30% deduction on eligible labour, these ranges become 437.50–612.50 SEK/m² and 350–525 SEK/m² respectively. Materials, repairs, access and other costs are separate. A long-term comparison must also account for the actual maintenance needed.

Paint, tape and protective coverings are additional at 187.50–250 SEK/m² including VAT. Any ROT deduction is conditional and applies only to eligible labour. Two owners do not automatically create a household entitlement; each person must meet the conditions and have remaining allowance. For a comparison, see example prices by façade type, and a more detailed façade painting price per square metre is on the façade painting price page. Compare the same preparation, area, materials and access. The final quote must define the scope and pricing model; scaffolding and difficult access may add costs.

Can I change from timber cladding to render or vice versa?

Changing façade material may be possible, but it is a construction decision requiring assessment, including the wall system, detailing and any required permissions. Compare an assessed construction quote with suitable maintenance of the existing façade.

The existing construction affects how a new façade system can be supported and detailed. Obtain a suitable design before changing materials. For example, cladding a rendered house needs a construction solution suitable for the building. The required support, details, permissions and scope must be assessed.

Compare retaining and repairing the current system with an assessed replacement option. Neither is automatically best; underlying defects, construction requirements, appearance, budget and maintenance determine the decision.

Which façade lasts longest and pays off long term for homeowners?

Neither timber nor render is automatically the lowest-cost long-term choice because the actual construction, condition, work scope and maintenance schedule determine cost. Compare these assumptions for the specific house.

A longer-term estimate should state the repair work, coating system, access costs and maintenance assumptions for each option. This guide does not establish universal intervals of 8–12 or 15–20 years.

Use the table as a specification checklist. No universal repainting frequency, job-price relationship or maintenance advantage is established for either material.

The listed square-metre rates are not a lifetime-cost calculation. Request a quote and maintenance guidance for the actual façade, including any repair or construction work. Relevant advice is also available for homeowners.

A full eligible 30% ROT example gives timber-façade labour of 437.50–612.50 SEK/m² and rendered-façade labour of 350–525 SEK/m² including VAT. Eligibility and remaining allowance must be checked for each person. Paint, tape and protection at 187.50–250 SEK/m² are excluded from ROT.

Frequently asked questions

Which needs least maintenance and costs least over time: render or timber?
Neither material is universally cheapest over time. Compare the actual repair and painting costs, access, product system and maintenance assumptions. NLL’s listed rates alone do not establish an annual-cost winner.
Can I change from timber to render at the next renovation?
Changing from timber to render requires an assessment of the wall construction and a suitable new system. Compare a construction specification and quote with repair or maintenance of the existing façade.
Can I apply render if I am tired of timber cladding?
Render is not a paint finish that can simply replace paint on existing timber cladding. A suitable construction design is needed, including support and moisture detailing. Confirm the scope and any permissions before ordering.
Which paint is used on rendered and timber façades?
Choose products documented as suitable for the actual timber or render, retained coating and exposure. Preparation, primers and finishing coats must form a compatible system; this guide does not establish an exclusive brand commitment.
