Compare DIY and professional painting for the same areas, preparation, materials and required result. DIY requires your time and equipment; a quote should show what the contractor takes responsibility for. A general saving percentage cannot decide which option suits you.

When is painting yourself worthwhile instead of hiring a painter?

DIY painting may be an option when the work is clearly defined, access can be arranged and you have time to follow the product instructions. Ask for help assessing an uncertain surface or scope of work.

What is included in the price when hiring a painter?

What is included is determined by your project's quote. Ask for a clear breakdown of work stages, materials and extras before comparing with your own estimate.

For interior painting, NLL Måleri quotes 250–437.50 SEK/m² for labour and 187.50–250 SEK/m² for paint, tape and protection. Amounts include VAT before any applicable ROT. The area is what will be painted, not automatically the home's floor area. Filling and other extras must be defined separately.

See interior painting prices for scope and NLL's interior painting for the service. When comparing contractors, the painting quote checklist helps you check the same work with each.

How does ROT work when hiring a painter?

Any ROT deduction applies to eligible purchased labour and requires the conditions to be met. Your own working time is not a deductible invoice item, and materials must remain separate from labour.

Check current conditions with Skatteverket. Compare the options before deductions first, then add any potential deduction separately. This avoids basing the decision on a deduction not yet confirmed for you.

What are the risks of painting the façade yourself?

When painting a façade yourself, avoid unsuitable surface treatment, painting in poor weather and unsafe access. Assess façade condition, product instructions and access before starting, especially for high gables or uncertain surfaces.

Identify the previous treatment and product requirements. Plan access before starting and have uncertain damage investigated. Read about exterior wall painting when comparing a professionally scoped quote with your DIY plan.

How long does professional painting take compared with DIY?

Time depends on scope, surface, team size and product drying times. There is no fixed time saving for every room or façade.

List stages separately: protection and preparation, surface work, painting, drying and reinstatement. Distinguish active working hours from calendar days when the surface waits for its next treatment. Request a schedule for the same scope when comparing with a painter.

How do you compare options for the same area?

Use a list specifying exactly which surfaces and stages are included. Add tools to buy or hire and decide how to value your own time. Your time value is an assumption, not an invoice or market rate.

NLL's price calculator provides a budgeting basis for selected work. Final scope and quotation need assessment for the actual project. This helps you decide even if you choose to do some clearly defined parts yourself.
