Kvidinge Church’s bell tower is documented in NLL’s project photographs, including work from scaffolding. The surface and existing treatment determine the required preparation.

Project at a glance

  • Painting work from scaffolding —the entire tower, all four sides, top to bottom
  • Cleaning and drying requirements depend on the existing surface and selected treatment
  • Freestanding buildings wear more evenly —but more heavily; there is no sheltered side
  • Work proceeded top to bottom —so nothing ran onto finished surfaces

How great is the before-and-after difference?

The photographs show the bell tower during the project. What looks like dirt on the left is algae established in the joints between boards.

How did the work proceed, step by step?

Sequence matters more on a freestanding timber building than an ordinary house because all work is from scaffolding and returning is not easy.

  1. Scaffolding around the whole towerAccess and scaffolding must be planned for the particular building, work and drying requirements.
  2. Washing downAlgae and dirt are removed, especially from board joints where they cling most firmly.
  3. DryingTimber dries before treatment. Treating damp timber traps moisture rather than protecting against it.
  4. Treatment from top to bottomSo nothing runs over an already finished surface.
  5. Inspection before scaffold removalThe final chance to reach high areas without rebuilding everything.

Why does a freestanding bell tower wear differently?

A freestanding timber structure can be exposed on several sides. Inspect each elevation and its details separately; exposure alone does not establish the degree or distribution of wear.

This is clearest at joints. Water running down cladding remains where boards meet, allowing algae to establish. We therefore spend more time washing and drying this building than a same-sized house façade.

Church buildings also have a requirement absent from house projects: work must not disrupt activities. We planned around the parish schedule.
