How much does it cost to hire a painter as a private customer?

NLL’s labour range for interior wall painting is 250–437.50 SEK/m² including VAT, before any ROT deduction; with a full 30% ROT deduction on eligible labour, the example range is 175–306.25 SEK/m². Paint, tape and protective coverings are separate at 187.50–250 SEK/m² including VAT. ROT depends on eligibility and remaining allowance; the project quote defines the final scope.

The price depends on the area, surface and condition. NLL Måleri charges per square metre for labour, and materials (paint, tape, protection) are invoiced separately. The ROT tax deduction applies only to labour costs, never to paint.

For 15 m² of wall surface, the confirmed labour range gives 3,750–6,562.50 SEK including VAT before any ROT deduction. This example uses wall area, not floor area, and excludes materials and additional work. How does the ROT tax deduction work when you hire a painter privately?

Eligible customers may receive a 30% ROT deduction on qualifying labour, up to 50,000 SEK per person per year. The deduction applies to houses, tenant-owned flats and holiday homes you own yourself, but not rented homes. ROT and RUT share a combined limit of 75,000 SEK per person per year.

Three things determine whether you qualify for the deduction: you own the home, the work is carried out in it, and you have paid enough tax to offset the deduction. A few important special cases affect the outcome.

  • A tenant-owned flat qualifies for ROT on work inside your flat, but not on the association's shared areas.
  • Rented home does not qualify for any deduction because you do not own the home.
  • A holiday home counts as your home and qualifies for ROT in the same way as your permanent home.

ROT and RUT share a combined limit of 75,000 SEK per person per year, with no more than 50,000 SEK for ROT. RUT already used can reduce the remaining combined allowance; it does not necessarily reduce ROT below its own limit. Eligibility also depends on sufficient tax and the other conditions.

Which painting services suit private customers?

Private customers most often hire painters for interior wall painting, ceiling painting, filling, and window and door painting. NLL Måleri in Kvidinge carries out these interior jobs in your home in north-west Skåne, with ROT on labour costs.

The most common jobs are inside the home, whether you live in a flat, terraced house or holiday home. Walls, ceilings and woodwork are typical, but many customers also book window restoration ahead of the season.

  • Interior painting of walls and ceilings.
  • Filling and smoothing before painting for a smooth finish, separately or combined with painting.
  • Windows and doors with repairs to rotten timber, priced per item.
  • Wallpaper removal and priming before repainting.
  • Colour schemes and advice on colour and sheen.

ROT depends on ownership, the home, the type of work, tax capacity and remaining allowance. For a housing association apartment, eligible work is generally limited to the interior work for which the member is responsible; shared exterior walls and stairwells are a separate matter. NLL works in Kvidinge, Åstorp, Klippan and the wider confirmed service area in north-west Skåne. For exterior walls and roofs, see the homeowner information. How much can you save with a ROT tax deduction on painting?

A full 30% ROT deduction reduces eligible labour costs by 30% when the customer, work and remaining allowance qualify. For 15 m² of wall surface at NLL’s labour range, the calculated deduction is 1,125–1,968.75 SEK; for 100 m² of wall surface, it is 7,500–13,125 SEK. Materials and other non-qualifying costs are excluded.

The saving increases with the size of the job, but the limit is rarely reached for interior-only work. The deduction is calculated only on what NLL Måleri invoices for labour, not on paint.

Example interior jobLabour including VATYou pay after ROTYou save
Room, 15 m² of wallsapprox. 5,000 SEKapprox. 3,500 SEKapprox. 1,500 SEK
Flat, 100 m² of wallsapprox. 30,000 SEKapprox. 21,000 SEKapprox. 9,000 SEK
Entire home, walls + ceilingsapprox. 50,000 SEKapprox. 35,000 SEKapprox. 15,000 SEK

For most interior projects, one person's limit is more than enough. If two of you own the home, you can divide the deduction between your personal identity numbers and double the allowance. Remember that RUT services you have already booked during the year use the same allowance. Materials are added on top of labour costs without a deduction, and you receive an exact calculation in the quote before work begins.

What should a quote include when you hire a painter privately?

A quote should include a description of the work, a price split into labour and materials, the amount of the ROT deduction, a schedule, F-tax details and the company registration number. NLL Måleri provides a written fixed-price quote with a separate ROT line before work starts.

A clear quote protects both you and the painter. It should show exactly what is included so that nothing is added afterwards without your knowledge. This is a key difference between a reputable company and someone doing undeclared work.

These points should be included:

  • Scope — which areas, number of coats and preparation are included.
  • Price — labour and material costs separately, so ROT is calculated correctly.
  • Swedish ROT tax deduction — the estimated amount and what you pay after the deduction.
  • Paint — brand and quality, for example STO, Jotun or Nordsjö.
  • Schedule — start and completion dates and how many days the work will take.
  • Company details — company registration number and approved F-tax status.

F-tax registration is crucial. If the painter is not F-tax registered, you cannot receive a ROT deduction, however clear the quote is. A reputable company states prices including VAT and shows ROT on its own line, not as a vague discount. NLL Måleri provides a fixed price rather than time-and-materials billing, so you know the cost before the first brushstroke. Ask for references and check that the company has liability insurance before accepting. The easiest way to start is to Request a free quote, and you will receive a complete quote to compare.

How does the ROT tax deduction work? – 4 steps

Before booking, check whether the customer and work qualify for ROT and whether sufficient allowance and tax capacity remain. If the full 30% deduction applies, the customer pays 70% of the eligible labour plus the full cost of materials and other non-qualifying items. NLL’s application to the Swedish Tax Agency follows payment for completed work.

  1. You book NLL Måleri and state that you want to use the ROT tax deduction.
  2. NLL Måleri carries out the work and itemises labour and materials separately on the invoice.
  3. For qualifying work, NLL applies to the Swedish Tax Agency after the work is completed and the customer has paid their share.
  4. If the full 30% ROT deduction applies, you pay 70% of eligible labour and the full cost of materials and other non-qualifying items.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to own the home to receive a ROT tax deduction for painting?
Yes. The ROT tax deduction applies only if you own the home where the work is carried out, such as a house, tenant-owned flat or holiday home. If you live in a rented home, you cannot receive a deduction because you do not own the home.
Can I receive a ROT tax deduction for painting a tenant-owned flat?
Yes, for work inside your own flat. However, the association's shared areas, such as stairwells and façades, do not qualify for a deduction for you as an individual member because they are owned by the housing association.
How much ROT tax deduction can a household receive in a year?
Each person may deduct up to 50,000 SEK per year. If there are two owners in the household, you can receive up to 100,000 SEK in ROT together, divided between your respective personal identity numbers.
Does the RUT deduction affect how much ROT I can use?
ROT and RUT share a combined limit of 75,000 SEK per person per year, with a maximum of 50,000 SEK for ROT. RUT usage can reduce the remaining combined allowance; your tax and other eligibility conditions must also be checked.
What happens if I have not paid enough tax for the ROT deduction?
The Swedish Tax Agency will then refuse the deduction afterwards, and you will have to pay the difference yourself. Check your ROT balance in the Swedish Tax Agency's My Pages before larger painting jobs.
