A Helsingborg house whose gable cladding had reached the end of its life. New vertical cladding was installed and painted, while the rendered lower section was washed and repainted white. Two surfaces on one wall, requiring two processes.
Project at a glance
- Cladding is replaced when timber fails —not when paint looks poor; paint can be renewed, rotten timber cannot
- End grain and lower edges matter —moisture enters there and cladding fails there first
- Render and timber need different paint —render must breathe, timber needs protection from movement and rain
- New cladding is primed on every side —before installation, not afterwards, when the back is inaccessible

What would cladding replacement like this cost at your home?
Area, cladding condition and amount needing replacement determine the price. Calculate a range below.

When should cladding be replaced rather than repainted?
Assess the timber separately from the paint. Loose coatings alone do not establish that cladding must be replaced. Damaged timber and defects in the underlying construction need their own repair assessment.
Check for soft or damaged timber, loose fixings and moisture-related defects, including at lower edges and end grain. A local defect does not by itself establish that the entire façade must be replaced.
Painting does not repair decayed timber. Assess the damaged material and any source of moisture before deciding on repair or replacement.
How did the work proceed, step by step?
Cladding replacement is two jobs: carpentry first, then painting. Their sequence determines durability.
- Removing old claddingCladding is removed and battens checked. Dry, intact battens remain.
- Checking newly exposed areasWith cladding removed, any moisture penetration into the structure becomes visible. Address it now rather than concealing it.
- Priming new cladding on all sidesThe back is primed before installation; afterwards it is inaccessible.
- Installation and two coatsNew vertical cladding is fitted and painted twice.
- Render washed and repaintedThe rendered lower section has its own process and paint type: render must breathe.
Why do render and timber get different paint?
Timber and render require compatible preparation and coating systems. Assess the material, condition and existing paint separately instead of choosing one treatment for both surfaces.
On this house, both meet on one wall. We treat them as separate surfaces with their own systems, paying particular attention to their junction, where water could otherwise enter behind render.
