Scraping paint from a facade before repainting

Facade work beside yellow timber cladding and scaffolding in Billinge.

Project photograph from Billinge. Choose tools and methods for the actual coating and substrate.

Quick answer

Remove paint that is loose or has lost adhesion before repainting timber cladding. Assess sound old coatings together with the new paint system; stripping every wall to bare wood is not automatic. Old, unknown coatings need their content and risks assessed before dust-producing work. Anza’s preparation guide separates removal of loose paint from later treatment.

  • Assess which coatings have lost sufficient adhesion.
  • Assess old, unknown paint before dust-producing work.
  • Plan tools and methods for the substrate’s condition and the risks.

How much paint needs removing?

Remove coatings without adequate adhesion, but establish why they are failing first. Thick, cracked layers and recurring blistering can require a different approach from one small loose patch. Beckers discusses these cases in its timber facade guide. This does not require complete stripping of every house.

Identify the coating and substrate before choosing the next treatment. See identifying existing facade paint and choosing a system if the earlier product is unknown.

Which tools suit facade scraping?

Select a scraper for the surface and access. A smaller tool may reach details while a two-handed scraper provides a different grip for larger areas. Anza’s facade scraper guide shows several types; one tool is not suitable for every profile and substrate.

Can you remove facade paint by machine?

Do not select mechanical removal before assessing the coating, substrate and dust risks. Old paint can contain lead; the Swedish Work Environment Authority identifies removing old lead paint as an occupational risk. Have an unknown coating assessed before sanding, milling or heating it. Read the authority’s discussion of chemical risks, in Swedish.

This guide does not provide a method for working on a hazardous coating. Obtain an assessment of method, protection, dust control and waste handling before planning such work.

Plan scraping before repainting

  1. Inspect first. Identify paint, substrate, loose areas and any risk requiring investigation.
  2. Plan access and collection. Arrange a safe working position and decide how flakes will be collected.
  3. Remove loose paint in a controlled way. Use a method suited to the assessed surface without damaging sound timber.
  4. Check damage. Assess soft or damaged wood before concealing it with paint.
  5. Continue within the chosen system. Cleaning, drying and priming must follow the product instructions.

This is a planning sequence for an identified, assessed surface. Anza’s workflow shows the basic stages but does not assess an unknown coating.

What follows paint removal?

Assess bare wood, remaining coatings and damage before priming. Product instructions determine treatment of bare patches, end grain and previously painted surfaces. Priming oil and primer are different products, not one identical specification for every coating type.

See priming for the substrate and paint system. If cleaning is also needed, separate the stages with our cleaning and drying guide.

What should a facade painting quote cover?

Describe the surfaces to paint and the assessed extent of scraping. Ask for access, removal, repairs, priming and finish coats to be defined. Uncertain damage needs a clear process in the quote, not an unverified fixed square-metre price.

Our house repainting planning guide puts preparation into the wider project. For NLL’s facade painting service, send facade photographs and describe the loose paint for assessment.
