A Klippan house with vertical timber cladding painted grey and white window and corner trim. Vertical cladding looks simple but has particular demands: water runs along each board instead of being shed outward, determining preparation and application.
Project at a glance
- Vertical cladding channels water down —each board becomes a channel, and lower end grain absorbs most
- End grain receives extra primer —moisture enters and paint first detaches there
- White woodwork painted last —to avoid touch-ups from cladding splashes
- Grey needs an even surface —darker colours reveal unevenness more clearly than light ones

What would timber façade painting like this cost at your home?
Area, cladding condition and scraping required determine the price. Calculate a range for your own house below.

How did the work proceed, step by step?
We follow the same sequence on every timber façade, regardless of colour and size.
- WashingThe entire façade is washed. Dirt and algae trapped beneath new paint continue affecting the surface.
- Scraping and sandingLoose paint is removed. A dark colour such as grey reveals every unevenness in side lighting, so sanding takes time.
- Priming, extra on end grainLower end grain absorbs most moisture and is where paint first detaches.
- Two coats on the claddingLarge areas first, with drying between coats.
- Window and corner trim lastWhite woodwork is painted after cladding to avoid repeated touch-ups from splashes.
Why is vertical cladding treated differently from horizontal?
Cladding details, joints and exposed end grain need inspection alongside the main surface. The board profile and construction affect how water is managed, so the coating alone does not determine performance.
Practically, we spend more time at the bottom: additional scraping, extra end-grain priming, and checking vegetation is not touching the façade and retaining moisture. Above that, work is more straightforward.
What should you consider with a grey façade?
Grey is among the colours placing greatest demands on preparation. Light façades hide minor unevenness, while mid-grey catches side light and reveals every joint, nail head and sanding mark, especially in late-day low sunlight.
A colour can look different as light and surroundings change. Review a suitable sample in the actual setting before confirming the colour; no fixed number of viewing times is required.
White woodwork against grey cladding is classic in Skåne but unforgiving: the edge must be straight because contrast draws the eye directly to it.
When is it time to repaint a timber façade?
Walk around and run your hand along the cladding. Fine powder on your palm means the coating has started chalking and planning is needed. Bare timber at joints or near the plinth means it is already late: moisture enters the wood and work increases.
Pay particular attention to south and west sides. They wear fastest, and one gable often needs attention years before the rest.
