How does NLL restore and paint a timber window?

Preparation and paint system suit the window’s condition. Painting with repairs is not automatically full restoration. Request a scope describing which window parts will be treated.

1. Assess the surface: state window numbers, sides to paint and visible timber, paint or putty damage.
2. Define repairs: clarify repairable parts and measures needing separate assessment.
3. Prepare the surface: cleaning, paint removal and sanding depend on condition.
4. Choose treatment: priming, any putty work and painting must follow system instructions.
5. Plan use: confirm drying times and when windows can open, close and be used.

What does window painting include?

The quote for your windows must state included tasks. Labour is priced per window, not automatically per sash. One window may contain several sashes with different interior and exterior needs.

• State whether sashes, frames, inside or outside will be painted.
• Describe cleaning, scraping and sanding needs.
• Mark damaged timber or putty for assessment.
• Request a clear separation of labour, materials and extras.

What happens to fittings and glass during restoration?

Fittings and glass need assessing when scope is defined. State damaged handles, hinges or glass. A painting price does not automatically include replacement.

Also clarify whether fittings will be removed and how glass and adjoining surfaces will be protected. Construction determines suitable tasks; not every window should use the same putty or method.

If putty needs replacing, preparation and overpainting must follow product instructions. A universal drying period or paint system for every window is therefore misleading.

Describe visible damage and send close-ups with the quote request. Glass or seal damage may need separate assessment before painting is planned.

Are windows painted on site or in a workshop?

Work location and any removal depend on scope and access. Confirm this with NLL before planning. This price list does not promise every window can be painted in its frame or that workshop work is included.

If sashes need removing, clarify handling, storage and opening protection. Also ask which rooms remain usable and when windows can return to use.

Should the window be restored or replaced?

Frame, sash and other component condition determine whether painting with repairs suffices. Visible rot warrants investigation; it does not itself mean replacing the whole window.

For more extensive measures, full window restoration must be assessed separately. Compare what can be preserved, the work needed and suitability for the building.

What does window painting cost?

Labour for windows with repairs costs 1,250–3,750 SEK per window including VAT before any applicable ROT. For doors with repairs, labour is 2,500–4,375 SEK per door on the same pricing basis. Materials extra. See prices for windows and doors with repairs or estimate your project cost.
