Wallpaper or paint – which suits your room best?

Straight seams and a prepared surface produce an even wallpaper finish.

Choose painting for a continuous colour and wallpaper for a pattern or texture you want to keep. Both need a suitable surface. Compare preparation, materials and maintenance. NLL Måleri offers filling and painting; wallpapering is compared here as an alternative.

Quick answer

Painting and wallpaper create different looks. Wall condition determines preparation for both.

  • Price: NLL’s wall painting labour costs 250–437.50 SEK/m² including VAT, before any applicable ROT deduction. Materials are charged separately.
  • Durability: compare the selected product’s properties and the room’s wear; neither method always lasts longest.
  • Surface: wallpaper does not replace repairs to holes, cracks or loose layers.
  • Changing the finish: plan a colour change or new wallpaper around preparation and product drying times.
  • NLL’s services: filling and painting, with a fixed price after a site visit.

What is the difference between painted walls and wallpaper?

Wallpapering covers the wall with sheets of paper, vinyl or textile to add pattern and texture, while painting applies a thin coating directly to the surface for a smooth, single-colour finish. Wallpaper adds a layer; paint follows the wall’s shape.

NLL Måleri offers filling and interior painting. The wallpaper comparison guides your material choice and does not mean NLL offers wallpapering.

Wallpaper is hung in drops. Roll quantity depends on roll dimensions, wall height and pattern matching. Paint is applied to the surface; coats and drying times follow the selected paint system’s instructions.

Plan colour changes around wall condition, preparation and product drying times. Old wallpaper does not always need removing, but loose layers must be assessed before further treatment. Read about NLL's interior painting and what to compare in a wallpapering quote.

Which is cheaper per square metre: painting or wallpapering?

Neither painting nor wallpapering is always cheapest; preparation and material choice determine the total. NLL’s wall painting labour costs 250–437.50 SEK/m² including VAT before any applicable ROT deduction, with materials separate. Compare quotes for the same wall area and scope. NLL does not publish wallpapering prices.

Compare working time, materials and preparation in the wallpapering quote. Roll quantity and pattern matching need specifying. For painting, paint, protective materials and any extra preparation should be listed separately from labour.

Which lasts longer: wallpaper or a painted wall?

Neither wallpaper nor paint always lasts longest. Product properties, the surface and room wear determine maintenance needs. Compare how damage can be repaired and whether differences in colour or texture might show afterwards.

Two questions determine the result: how long the surface looks intact and how easily it can be repaired. The methods differ more in maintenance than sheer lifespan.

A local repair can show on a painted wall too. For Interio Väggfärg 20, Beckers recommends using the same product for touch-ups and painting corner to corner to avoid texture, colour and sheen differences. Wallpaper repair options depend on the damage and availability of matching wallpaper. Any warranty and its scope should appear in the agreement; this comparison gives no general warranty periods.

Which hides uneven walls better: wallpaper or paint?

Wallpaper texture may affect how a wall looks, but wallpaper does not replace necessary preparation. Holes, cracks and loose layers need assessing before both painting and wallpapering.

Boråstapeter’s surface preparation advice states that the surface should be dry, even and firmly attached. Pattern and texture are appearance choices; they do not establish that a damaged wall is ready for wallpaper.

Assess the wall in the room’s lighting before choosing a finish. For a smooth painted surface, filling and smoothing before painting explains how preparation differs from painting itself. NLL’s services here do not include remediation or plasterboard installation.

The surface compatibility rule

Check the surface before choosing the finish. Wallpaper and paint need a sound, prepared surface. Adapt repairs and filling to its condition and the selected product instructions rather than using wallpaper to hide damage.

Check colour, texture and seams with samples in the lighting where the wall will be seen. NLL assesses the surface for filling and painting during the site visit.

How often should you repaint or replace wallpaper?

Repaint or replace wallpaper when wear, damage or a desired new look warrants it. There is no universal interval for all products and rooms. Follow the care instructions for the paint or wallpaper on the wall.

Maintenance frequency, rather than initial price, determines long-term cost. A cheaper method needing renewal twice as often may cost more over twenty years.

How often should you repaint or replace wallpaper
RoomMaintenance needsMost common reason
BedroomLowest wear: longest intervalsAppearance, new style
Living roomModerate wearSun fading
HallwayHigher wear: more frequent maintenanceAbrasion, stains
KitchenHigher wear: more frequent maintenanceMoisture, grease

Plan repainting around preparation and paint drying times. When replacing wallpaper, first assess what can remain and what must be removed. A wallpapered feature wall can be combined with painted walls, but NLL’s services are filling and painting. Find more advice in our painting guides.

Wear in each room determines renewal frequency

Maintenance by room: bedrooms have the lowest wear and longest intervals; living rooms have moderate wear from sun fading; halls and kitchens have higher wear, needing more maintenance for abrasion and stains, or moisture and grease respectively.

Frequently asked questions

Is painting or wallpapering cheaper?
It depends on preparation and material choice. Compare quotes for the same wall area and scope. NLL’s wall painting labour costs 250–437.50 SEK/m² including VAT before any applicable ROT deduction; materials are separate. NLL offers filling and painting, not wallpapering.
Can you paint directly over old wallpaper?
Some wallpapers can be painted when the surface is suitable and the wallpaper firmly attached. Preparation depends on wallpaper type. Beckers’ advice on painting over wallpaper distinguishes materials and states that loose wallpaper must be dealt with before painting.
Which lasts longer: wallpaper or a painted wall?
Neither method always lasts longest. Product, surface and wear determine this. Touch-up painting can cause colour, sheen or texture differences; Beckers’ advice for Interio Väggfärg 20 recommends the same product and painting corner to corner for the most even result.
Does a wall need filling before painting or wallpapering?
Holes, cracks and unevenness need assessing before either treatment. Wallpaper also requires an even, sound surface. The amount of filling depends on wall condition and the chosen finish. NLL assesses preparation for filling and painting at a site visit.
