What affects the price of filling and painting?

The price for a room depends on the area to be treated and the preparation it needs. A room with a floor area of 12 m² does not automatically have 12 m² to paint. Walls and any ceiling need to be measured separately, with the scope stated in the quote.

Check the following in particular:

  • Area: which walls and ceilings are included?
  • Surface: are there holes, joints, loose material or uneven areas?
  • Preparation: is local filling or skim coating needed?
  • Painting: what does the surface require, and what do the chosen paint’s instructions specify?
  • Access: can the whole room be worked on and the remaining furnishings protected?

There is no fixed percentage for the preparation needed on your particular job. Read about filling and skim coating to understand the difference between the tasks.

What does DIY cost compared with hiring a painter?

When you do the work yourself, you pay for materials and tools and spend your own time preparing, filling, drying, sanding and painting. Your own labour does not qualify for ROT. A weekend is not a valid time estimate for every room.

How much does the ROT deduction reduce the cost?

ROT can reduce labour costs by up to 30% when the conditions are met. Materials do not qualify. Your possible deduction depends on factors including the property, your tax capacity and your remaining allowance.

How much does the ROT deduction reduce the cost?
Example: 40 m² of treated surfaceAmount
Labour: 40 × 562.50 SEK22,500 SEK
ROT, if the full deduction can be used: 30%−6,750 SEK
Labour after deduction15,750 SEK

Materials and any extras are additional. A property’s age does not by itself exclude all maintenance from ROT: the rules distinguish repairs and maintenance from new construction and alterations. Check The Swedish Tax Agency's ROT conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How long does filling and painting a room take?
The time depends on the area, surface condition, tasks and product drying times. Ask for a schedule for your room; a general promise of one or two days is not possible.
Must you fill before repainting?
Holes, joints and uneven areas may need filling before painting. An already even surface in good condition does not automatically need skim coating. Assess the surface and follow the product instructions.
How many litres of paint does a room need?
Calculate paint quantity from the paintable area, number of coats and the paint’s stated coverage: area × number of coats ÷ m² per litre. Use the chosen product’s figures; the room’s floor area alone is not enough.
Can you get ROT for filling and painting?
Yes, the work may qualify for ROT when the conditions are met. The deduction applies to labour, not materials. Check your own and the property’s eligibility with the Swedish Tax Agency before ordering.
