Cleaning a façade before painting removes algae, dirt and residues that can impair adhesion. Choose the cleaning method for the actual surface and paint system, then confirm that the surface meets the product’s drying and moisture requirements before painting.

Quick answer

Assess and clean the façade as required by the selected paint system. Remove contamination without damaging the surface, and verify drying conditions before painting.

  • Cleaning is essential – dirt, growth and loose residues can impair adhesion; the required preparation depends on the actual surface.
  • Follow application and rinsing instructions – the cleaner specifies the method, contact time and whether rinsing is required.
  • Choose a cleaner for the façade type – use a product compatible with the surface and coating, at the concentration stated in its instructions.
  • Confirm drying readiness – elapsed days alone do not establish readiness. Check the selected paint’s surface-moisture and weather requirements.
  • Included in exterior wall painting — a fixed-price quote based on the assessed scope. Eligible private customers may receive a ROT tax deduction on qualifying labour.

Do you need to clean the façade before painting?

Assess algae, dirt, grease and chalking paint particles can impair adhesion. Cleaning and other preparation should follow the chosen paint system and the condition of the surface.

Preparation must leave a sound surface that suits the new coating. Assess contamination, loose material and moisture, and follow the cleaning and paint manufacturers’ instructions. Fresh render may have its own curing and preparation requirements.

Moisture exposure is high in north-west Skåne, around Kvidinge, Åstorp and Klippan. The proximity of Skälderviken and Öresund brings damp air that feeds green algae and black mould on north-facing and shaded walls. We therefore often see heavy growth on façades facing woodland or large trees.

Appropriate cleaning removes specified contamination and can make surface damage easier to inspect. It does not replace scraping, repairs or a moisture assessment where these are needed. The related work is described under façade renovation and painting.

Assess preparation first

Cleaning, scraping, filling and priming are planned according to the condition of the surface and the chosen paint system. Choose preparation from the surface condition and the paint system. Do not assume that washing alone establishes a sound, dry surface or that every fresh render system needs the same treatment.

The key figures behind effective façade cleaning

Preparation, ROT eligibility and timber moisture checks before exterior painting. Preparation and moisture limits depend on the surface and product system; ROT is conditional.

How do you clean a façade before painting, step by step?

Five steps: protect plants and electrics, select and apply a compatible cleaner, observe its contact time, rinse if instructed and check drying conditions. This is a planning checklist; the product instructions determine the actual sequence.

Follow the cleaner’s application direction, contact time and rinsing instructions. Protect adjacent materials and avoid allowing the product to dry on the surface unless the manufacturer specifically requires it.

A surface’s condition and construction matter as well as its material. Confirm whether pressure washing is suitable and avoid forcing water into joints or damaging the coating. Rinse-off and leave-on products have different instructions.

Scrape loose paint and fill where necessary after rinsing. If cracks and holes need repair, this can be combined with crack and hole repairs as part of the same project.

What should you use to remove algae and mould from a façade?

Use a biocide-free or biocide-based façade cleaner that breaks down green algae, black mould and lichen. We choose the cleaner to suit the façade type and the paint system to follow.

Some cleaners require rinsing after a stated contact time; others are formulated to remain on the surface. Select a product approved for the actual surface and intended coating. Shade alone does not determine which type to use.

Use the dilution and application method specified for the selected cleaner and surface. Do not infer that timber always needs a weaker mixture than render or that all coatings tolerate the same cleaner.

The extent of contamination may require additional treatment or gentle mechanical cleaning according to the product instructions. Assess the surface before deciding whether treatment needs repeating. For timber cladding, read about painting timber cladding and façades.

Rinse-off or leave-on façade cleaner?Rinse-off cleaners must be removed as directed; leave-on products follow their own instructions. How long should the façade dry after cleaning before painting?

There is no reliable universal drying time after façade cleaning. Paint only when the surface and weather meet the selected coating’s instructions; check timber moisture with an appropriate method where required.

A damp or unsuitable surface can impair coating performance. Waiting a fixed number of days is not a substitute for checking the actual surface and product requirements.

Drying depends on the amount of water, surface, weather and exposure. Sunshine or shade alone cannot establish a precise number of days before repainting.

Use a suitable moisture check where the paint system requires it, alongside its other surface and weather conditions. The timing is also discussed in the best time to paint exterior walls in Skåne.

When should a painter handle façade cleaning for you?

When the façade is high, has heavy growth or will be repainted afterwards. Cleaning can be included as preparation within an agreed exterior painting project; the quote should define its scope and cost.

Height, risk and responsibility for the result determine the choice. DIY cleaning suits a single-storey house with light growth that a practical homeowner can reach from the ground. Choose cleaning and algae removal by a painter as part of repainting when scaffolding is needed, growth has built up over years, or you want one contractor responsible for both cleaning and the paint finish.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to clean a façade before repainting?
Assess and clean the surface as required by the chosen paint system before repainting. A surface that looks clean may still have residues that affect adhesion. The preparation needed depends on its actual condition.
Can you pressure-wash a timber façade without damaging it?
Do not assume pressure washing is suitable for every timber façade. Check the surface condition, joints and cleaner instructions; use a method that avoids damaging fibres or forcing water into the construction.
How long does a façade need to dry after cleaning in Skåne?
Drying time varies with the surface, amount of water and conditions. Confirm the chosen paint’s moisture and weather requirements before painting; a fixed number of days is not sufficient.
Is façade cleaning included when NLL Måleri paints the exterior?
Cleaning is part of the agreed preparation when included in the painting quote. Ask for the cleaning, other preparation, painting and access costs to be clearly defined. Any ROT deduction depends on eligibility and remaining allowance.
