Adjust indoor conditions to the paint instructions when painting in winter.

You can paint indoors in winter when the room and surface meet the paint's temperature, moisture and ventilation requirements. The outdoor temperature alone does not determine the conditions. Check the product instructions and plan the time between coats before starting.

Quick answer
  • Check both the room and the surface to be painted.
  • Use the drying time for the chosen product and its stated conditions.
  • Allow time for ventilation, drying and reinstatement before using the room again.

Can you paint indoors in winter?

Yes, a heated room can be painted even when it is cold outside. The surface and indoor conditions must suit the paint you use. Cold external walls and condensation need assessing before painting.

As a product example, Beckers Living Väggfärg 20 specifies a surface temperature of +5 to +25°C. These limits apply to that product; they are not a universal temperature requirement for all interior paints.

NLL Måleri carries out interior wall and ceiling painting. Describe the rooms and surfaces involved when planning winter work.

Indoor conditions need to meet the paint manufacturer's instructions, including during winter.

How do temperature and humidity affect drying time?

Drying times in a product sheet apply under stated conditions and cannot be transferred directly to every room. Check the temperature and humidity used by the manufacturer, and distinguish touch-dry, ready to recoat and ready for full use.

Example from a product sheet – not a universal drying rule
ProductTime before the next coatConditions
Beckers Living Väggfärg 203 hours+23°C and 50% relative humidity, according to the manufacturer.

The information comes from Beckers' product instructions. Do not apply the next coat simply because a certain number of hours has passed if the surface or conditions differ.

How do you ventilate correctly when painting in winter?

Maintain effective ventilation and follow the paint's instructions for airing during and after painting. Avoid prolonged airing that cools the surface below the product's minimum temperature. Do not close the room's normal air vents to keep the paint warm.

  • Read the product and safety information before starting.
  • Plan ventilation so the room stays within the paint's temperature requirements.
  • Check cold surfaces for condensation and moisture before painting.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions before furnishing and using the room again.

There is no universal number of airing minutes suitable for every room, ventilation system and paint.

Which paints work best indoors in winter?

Choose paint for the surface and room's use, and check that working conditions suit the product. Winter alone is no reason to change paint type. A wall, ceiling and woodwork may need different products.

For ceilings, see the guide to painting interior ceilings, including checks on old paint and the order of work.

Do not use ordinary wall-paint instructions for a door or wet-room system. If the wall needs smoothing before painting, the skim-coating guide explains how surface condition affects preparation.

Why is winter a good time to book interior painting?

Winter can suit interior painting if you can set aside the room for preparation, painting and drying. Plan around how the room is used and how furniture will be moved. Availability must be confirmed for the specific job.

If painting is planned before a move, the guide to painting before moving in helps organise the stages. For budgeting, use the cost calculator and then describe your project in a quote request. State your preferred period and which rooms are involved.
