Painting before moving in – plan rooms, preparation and timing
Published · Updated

Protected floor, roller and paint tray ready for interior painting.
Plan painting before moving in by first deciding which rooms and surfaces must be finished, then what preparation is needed and when the rooms can be used. Distinguish active working time, drying time and moving day. This guide covers planning painting in a home you own.
Which rooms need to be finished first?
Prioritise rooms needed immediately after the move and rooms where large furniture would obstruct the work. List the walls, ceilings and any woodwork for each room. A room name alone does not describe the scope.
| Room or surface | Decide before booking | Note in the schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Walls, ceiling or both | When the room must be ready for furniture and use |
| Living room | Colour, finish and preparation | Where furniture will go during the work |
| Hallway | Which routes must remain accessible | How moving and painting can be kept separate |
| Several rooms | Which rooms can be done in a later phase | A clear handover for each phase |
The table is a planning template. It does not state how many days a room takes to complete.
What preparation needs planning?
Wall condition determines whether minor repairs are enough or more filling and treatment of old finishes are required. Photograph holes, joints and areas where paint or wallpaper has come loose.
Can you paint over the old wallpaper?
The wallpaper type and adhesion need checking before using it as a painting surface. Beckers distinguishes several wallpaper types and describes different preparation in its guide to painting over wallpaper. Loose wallpaper should not be treated as a ready-to-paint surface when planning.
For the preparation itself, see the separate guide to painting over existing wallpaper.
If a smoother wall is needed, the next step is explained in a guide to skim coating. NLL offers filling and painting; this guide does not constitute an offer of wallpaper hanging.
In what order should the work be done?
Agree access and protection first, followed by preparation, painting and handover. Coordinate other booked work before deciding when furniture and moving boxes should be brought in.
Once the sequence is agreed, read more about preparing and painting walls.
- Agree when the home is available and who will provide the keys.
- Mark what is to be painted and what must be protected or left untouched.
- Complete the preparation required for the chosen paint system.
- Allow drying time between stages according to product instructions.
- Agree when the room can be furnished and how newly painted surfaces should be handled.
If both ceiling and walls are being painted, Beckers recommends painting the ceiling before the walls. This sequence does not replace a coordinated plan for other trades.
How do you plan drying time and moving in?
Use the instructions for the products that will actually be used. Touch-dry, ready to recoat and fully cured describe different stages. A surface ready for another coat may not yet have reached its final durability.
As a product example, Beckers states for Interio Väggfärg 20 that the surface should be handled carefully during curing. This is not a universal moving-in time for every paint or home. Ask the painter to specify when the room can be used and when surfaces can be cleaned.
Moving day is a practical deadline to plan around. It does not shorten the product's drying time. If there is too little margin, choose which rooms to finish first and which can wait.
What information does the painter need?
Send a room list, location, photos, approximate wall and ceiling areas, and the dates for access and moving in. State which dates are fixed and which are flexible. The home's floor area is not the same as the area to be painted.
NLL Måleri's interior painting can be planned alongside the necessary preparation. For budgeting, see the price guide for painting a house interior. Then use the painting quote checklist to have the scope, schedule and cost clearly described.
