What does painting a house interior cost?
Updated

For 200 m² of wall and ceiling area, NLL Måleri’s estimated labour, paint, tape and protection total is 87,500–137,500 SEK including VAT before any applicable ROT. Filling, repairs and extras are excluded. A house price must use painted area, not living area alone.
The budget is clearer with a line for each room and each task counted once. Some walls may only need painting, others filling first. Include ceilings only where they will be treated.

How do you calculate area throughout a house?
Total wall and ceiling areas room by room. Keep measurements and specify exclusions so scope can be checked before quoting.
Why is living area insufficient?
Living area does not describe wall numbers or which ceilings will be painted. Layout, ceiling height and chosen surfaces affect quantities. Two homes of equal living area can therefore have different painting areas.
How do you make a simple room list?
List rooms, wall areas, ceiling areas and desired work. Mark unknown measurements rather than filling them with generic assumptions.
| Room | Walls | Ceilings | Surface and desired work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Enter measurements | State whether the ceiling will be painted | Describe condition and scope |
| Bedroom | Enter measurements per room | State whether the ceiling will be painted | Mark areas needing filling |
| Hallway | Enter measurements | State whether the ceiling will be painted | Describe access and exclusions |
The table is a form to complete, not assumed standard areas. For measuring, see the interior painting per m² guide.
What does 200 m² of painted surface cost?
Labour is 50,000–87,500 SEK and stated painting materials 37,500–50,000 SEK including VAT. The total is 87,500–137,500 SEK before any applicable ROT.
The calculation covers a combined 200 m² of treated wall and ceiling:
| Item | Surface | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Painting labour | 200 × 250–437.50 SEK | 50,000–87,500 SEK |
| Paint, tape and protection | 200 × 187.50–250 SEK | 37,500–50,000 SEK |
| Total before ROT | These two items | 87,500–137,500 SEK |
The example does not automatically include filling, repairs, doors, windows or other work. It is not a standard price for a house with 200 m² of living area.
Does the same labour range apply to walls and ceilings?
Yes, NLL’s pricing basis gives 250–437.50 SEK per m² including VAT for both. Still count them separately so unpainted ceilings do not enter the budget.
How do you calculate surfaces needing filling?
Divide the painted area by scope. The filling-and-painting package costs 562.50 SEK per m² in labour including VAT and replaces separate labour lines for that same package on that area.
How do you avoid counting work twice?
Use either the package or agreed separate tasks for a surface. Do not add both the package and a full painting charge to the same square metres.
An example with 160 m² of painting only and 40 m² of the package gives labour of 62,500–92,500 SEK including VAT before any applicable ROT: 40,000–70,000 SEK painting and 22,500 SEK package. Materials and other possible costs are extra.
Read the filling and painting price guide for the distinction between options.
What needs planning when several rooms are involved?
Agree which rooms will be done, access and coordination. A prioritised room list describes preferences without promising a schedule before scope is assessed.
Can painting take place while you live there?
Describe which rooms must remain available. Request a proposed sequence and practical requirements. A square-metre price alone cannot establish whether the whole home can be used normally.
What should be stated about furniture, protection and reinstatement?
The quote must clarify who clears work areas and what covering and reinstatement include. Give your preferred start date and any fixed move-in dates. Do not treat a cost estimate as a confirmed booking.
How does ROT affect the overall budget?
ROT covers up to 30% of eligible labour, subject to conditions and sufficient allowance. Read the Swedish Tax Agency's rules.
For the 200 m² painting-only example, labour and stated materials become 72,500–111,250 SEK after a 30% deduction on all labour. This assumes full entitlement; extras are excluded.
How do you get comparable prices for the whole house?
Use the same room list, areas and work description when requesting quotes. The guide to comparing painting quotes helps you check scope.
See NLL's interior painting, use the cost calculator for the budget and send a quote request with the room list and photos.
